The human foot is made up of 26 individual bones forming 33 joints and held together by strong ligaments and fibrous sheaths to maintain the structure. Tendonitis typically means inflammation of the tendons. Achilles tendonitis is a common sporting injury that can be described as an overuse injury. Overloading the Achilles over a short period of time with high intensity exercise, such as training for a marathon in a short space of time, can lead to pain, tightness and lack of strength in the calf muscles. Achilles tendonitis, if left untreated can lead to a higher risk of tendon tears and reduction in overall power and function in the calf and ankle muscles.
